6 Reasons to do your CLEP prep with Study.com

I was compensated for my time in writing this review.  As always, all opinions are my own.

Do you have things in your life that you just can’t shut up about?  Yeah, CLEP testing is one of those things for me.  I was sitting in the waiting room waiting for an oil change recently and found myself telling someone about earning college credit by exam.

Earning credits like this has made a gigantic difference in the way we homeschool high school and are doing college.  So when I discovered Study.com’s CLEP test prep product, I was a little ga-ga.

CLEP Tests

If you’re not familiar with CLEP testing, they are essentially tests that you can take to prove mastery of a subject and earn college credit (just as though you’d passed the same class at a college or university).

Earning credit by exam has allowed us to save thousands of dollars already.  (Now you can see why I tell everyone I meet about it!)

I’ve written about our experience with credit by exam, and how it fit into our homeschooling plans in my series on homeschooling high school.  But I like to remind people that it’s not just for homeschoolers, and the program has been around for a long time.  (I even passed CLEP tests in college eons ago, earning credit for four years of college Spanish in a matter of hours!)

Reasons to Use Study.com for CLEP Prep

1.  Information is presented in a variety of ways.

Everyone learns differently.  By far my favorite thing about homeschooling is that you can tailor learning to your child.  I love that Study.com offers a variety of ways to take in the information, so that everyone can be successful.

  • Short, engaging videos
  • Supporting text transcripts for videos
  • Quizzes
  • Practice Tests
  • Personalized study plan

For us, videos were key.  But having the written transcripts to review, or take additional notes from, was fantastic!  Here’s an example of a text transcript:

2.  The videos are actually engaging…and thorough.

Too many videos that are shooting for witty end up overly corny and can seem childish.  These are not those videos.

We watched videos in a variety of subjects, and I can say with confidence that these are quality.  The instructors are college level.  They teach with wit (really) and knowledge, using real life examples.  Best of all, they are easy to understand and follow.

3.  Quizzes give immediate feedback.

Taking a short quiz right after watching a video helps to cement the knowledge for the learner.  Knowing that a quiz is coming also gives students a reason to pay close attention to the lesson instead of letting their mind wander.

And here’s my favorite part–the quiz gives you the option to either read an explanation of the correct answer or click to be taken back to the point in the video that discussed that concept and re-watch it.  That was an unexpected level of follow-up, and I loved it!

4.  Practice tests help you identify strengths and weaknesses.

Study.com’s practice tests are designed to help familiarize students with the kind of questions they’ll see on actual CLEP exams.  When preparing for these tests, practice tests are one of the most valuable tools to use.

Like the quizzes, you can read explanations of answers or be directed to the location in the video that covers it.  And you’re also given areas of strengths and weaknesses, which help you know what you need to focus on.

5.  You can try it for free!

I love a free trial, don’t you?!  It gives you the opportunity to really poke around and see all the features to be sure it’s a good fit for you.  (I’m sighing, thinking of all the money we’d have saved on math curriculum over the years if everything came with a free trial!)

6.  Course outline keeps you on track.

An overview of each subject maps out each lesson in an easy to follow order.  I don’t know about you, but that is a life-saver in our homeschool!  It really allows teens to take ownership of their studying and manage their time, while allowing you to see at a glance what they’ve completed.
