Hugh Hefner, Dennis Prager, and the Destructive Nature of Pornography

October 2, 2017 by Susan 8 Comments

I was so disappointed to hear Dennis Prager’s views on pornography recently, and equally pleased to see other men speaking truth on this important issue.

Do you think that using pornography is okay as long as one remains physically faithful?

Hugh Hefner died last week.  While I don’t revel in his death, the phrase ‘good riddance’ did cross my mind.  Hefner contributed heavily to bringing pornography to the mainstream, making it more easily accessible and normalized.  Grieving his death never entered my mind.

What did make me sad was hearing Dennis Prager speak about his father subscribing to Playboy.  He said that he felt no shame over it.  After all, his dad had been faithful to his mother for seventy-some years.

Still here…

True belief leads to action

I keep seeing on social media that “some Christians” thought the world was going to end on Saturday.  The funny thing is, I never saw any actual Christians posting this.  But that’s neither here nor there.

What’s been on my mind is that if someone honestly believes that the world is about to end, they should be telling people.  True belief leads to action.

So the real question is:  Am I acting on what I say I believe?  And are you?

Being the body of Christ starts with (gasp!) talking to each other

September 11, 2017 by Susan Leave a Comment

Real ways to begin to build relationships at church...to build the body of Christ.

“For the body is not one member, but many…Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it”

I heard a simple yet profound insight into this passage in Corinthians recently…ready?

In order to be a body…the various parts have to be physically present.

Mind blown.

In this age of texting, tweets and messaging…when an email seems like a deeply personal conversation…and a phone call downright intimate—we’ve got some work to do.

Have we disconnected the fruit from the seeds when it comes to a Biblical worldview?

August 28, 2017 by Susan Leave a Comment

Teaching a Biblical worldview matters!  Kids are leaving their faith at astounding rates. How long is it going to take for us to recognize the seeds that produce this fruit & start planting something different?

The seeds of naturalism are growing fruit in our kids that we didn't expect.

I heard a story recently about a young man who was out in his father’s watermelon field working, with strict instructions not to eat any of the fruit.  Giving in to temptation, he attempted to hide the evidence by burying the remains off in another part of the field.  He was sure he’d gotten away with it until his father noticed watermelons growing where they didn’t belong.  The evidence was irrefutable.  Undeniable.  Once the fruit appeared, the son could not hide that he had buried the seeds in just that place.

Rejection hurts, no matter how you spin it

August 21, 2017 by Susan 2 Comments

Even though rejection hurts, can’t we find joy in the pain?  Can’t our hurt be beautiful too?

Rejection hurts. No matter how you try to spin it, it leaves a wound. But can't we find joy in the pain, can't our hurt be beautiful too?

Rejection hurts.  No matter how you try to spin it, it leaves a wound.  When it is someone else being rejected, we are quick to share our platitudes, as genuine as they might be.

Maybe next time.

It’s not you.

You did great.

There’s something better out there for you.

Someday it’ll all make sense.

All potentially true.  Yet none heals the sting of not measuring up.  Don’t misunderstand me, I am a firm believer that we need people to speak truth into our hearts when the truth doesn’t feel true.  But sometimes…it’s also ok to just say, “That sucks.  I’d be hurt too.”

Summer is for Serving

July 24, 2017 by Susan Leave a Comment

Summer is for serving

Summers are the greatest, aren’t they?

It’s all relaxing and eating bon-bons and sipping iced tea. …Yeah, not around here either.  But that doesn’t mean that summer’s not fantastic.

Our summers are filled with fun, but they’re also filled with lots of service opportunities.  If we’re not heading to a camp, we are hosting a team of people.
