Teens and Social Media: Is Humiliation Inevitable?

January 23, 2017 by Susan 17 Comments

As if youth isn't full of enough opportunities to embarrass oneself locally. Are teens and social media a recipe for disaster?

Is anyone else crazy thankful that social media didn’t exist when you were young?  I embarrassed myself perfectly well the old-fashioned way, thank you very much: Locally.

The advent of social media has taken normal teenage angst, the awkwardness of youth, and the misinformed (but oh-so-passionate) pleas of young adulthood and turned them into international news.

And in an amazing turn of manipulation, these young people have been convinced that this is a good thing!  Remarkable. Continue Reading

Small Ways to Serve Close to Home this Christmas

December 21, 2016 by Susan 13 Comments

There are loads of ways your family can help your community without traveling far from home!  Parents and kids can serve together, helping others as a family.

There are many small ways to serve close to home at Christmas. You don't have to trek downtown to scoop soup for the homeless for 10 hours to serve.

Did you know that you don’t have to trek downtown into the inner city to scoop soup for the homeless to serve others this Christmas?  I mean, that would be great.  Totally do that if you want.  But there are other ways, smaller ways, that are no less meaningful.

All of us strive to teach our children that Christmas is about more than presents for me – me – me.   Jesus, whose birth we celebrate, served.  And he told us to serve.  Certainly we should be doing this all year long.  But we would be remiss to ignore the fact that Christmastime is a season in which many people feel forgotten, lonely, and quite frankly…sad.

The Sparrow's Home...Gathering and sharing all things "home" because we need each other. thesparrowshome.com

I love gathering information, learning, and sharing my treasures with others who may benefit.  That’s why I started The Sparrow’s Home.  And while I really do enjoy sharing things I’m finding…sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and touch base in a more personal way.  I mean, after all…what do you really know about me? (insert sinister laugh–Bwahahaha)

I try to insert tidbits from my life into my posts.  But I thought today I’d take a break from my regular posting to tell you what’s been filling my life lately, and a little bit about what’s happening at The Sparrow’s Home.

Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Became Parents

November 2, 2016 by Susan 11 Comments

We spend so much time preparing for pregnancy and so little preparing for parenting.

Do you ever think we spend way too much time preparing for the wrong things?  Think about it.  We spend way more time preparing for our wedding than we do our marriage.  More time preparing to get pregnant and “have a baby” than becoming parents.

Gary Chapman’s new book, “Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Became Parents” takes a look at preparing for parenting both in mind and practice.  Early in the book he says, “In addition to attitude changes, we also need to take practical steps..”  And this book helps you do both very effectively.  If you’d like the chance to win a copy, read on!

I Want to Live in a World Where I Can Filter Content in Movies

October 5, 2016 by Susan 8 Comments

Finding a service that allows us to filter content in movies has rocked our world!

Gah!  I am sold out on this service we’ve discovered!!  We just had a friend tell us about it last week and we’ve already used it twice.

I can’t count how many movies we’ve skipped over the years because of a just a scene or two with sexual content or pervasive language.  Or movies that we watched years ago that we’d love to show our boys…except for that one part.  You know what I’m talking about, right?  If only we could filter content in movies…

Some years ago, there was a service that allowed people to rent movies and filter content as they chose.  It was shut down pretty quickly, if I remember correctly, by Hollywood big-wigs crying, “Censorship!”

Enter VidAngel.

Kids Farm Party

September 28, 2016 by Susan Leave a Comment

Ideas for planning a kids farm party!

I told you a few weeks ago I’d be sharing some of the themed kids parties we did for our boys over the years.  We started with a Pirate themed party and next I’d like to give you some ideas if you’re planning a Farm Party.

Let me remind you, and ask for your grace, regarding the quality of the pictures.  My kids are in 10th and 12th grades right now.  These pictures were taken many years ago, and scanned from scrapbooks.  Funny thing…when I look at my teenagers today, I still see the little boys in these pictures.  (Pause for sentimental mom moment)
