14 short prayers based in Scripture that you can pray for your country. With everything going on you might feel a bit powerless, but you are not! God’s word gives hope, strength, and purpose.
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
Prayer can give the pray-er a lot of comfort and peace. But so much more than that…God flat out tells us that he responds to prayer and he acts.
Want some proof?
Moses sought God’s favor and he relented. He prayed God’s own words about his promises to Abraham. And the LORD withheld his punishment.
So he said he would destroy them– had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. Psalm 106:23
But in another case, God told Ezekiel he was looking for someone to stand in the gap and found no one, so judgement fell.
Both groups of people deserved God’s punishment, but in one instance God relented and in the other he did not. The difference seems to be the prayers of God’s people.
You may feel powerless in the face of events that are beyond your control, but God’s people are never powerless.
Before we ever speak or act, our first order of business is to pray. Whatever our differences may be, if you are a Bible-believing Christian, I invite you to pray God’s word for your country. It may make a real difference.

14 Scripture-based prayers to pray for your country
Day 1 – Pray for humility
Lord, I humble myself before your throne. You are so exalted that no one can even fathom your greatness. What comfort I take in that! I humbly ask for wisdom to see my world and circumstances as you see them. Please correct me when I accept wrong beliefs. I ask you to guide me in what is right and teach me your way. (Proverbs 11:2, Psalm 25:9, Psalm 145)
Day 2 – Pray for eyes to see
God of all wisdom, I ask you to open my eyes to what is going on around me both personally and nationally. Staying in my private bubble is comfortable, but it neither allows me to know truth nor fully serve you. In my daily life, I want to be like the Good Samaritan, who saw and acted even if it means going out of my way. I also want to be wise and knowledgeable about world events and understand them clearly. (James 1:5, Proverbs 18:15, Luke 10:25-37)
Day 3 – Pray for your national leaders
God who is King of the Universe, you are the ultimate ruler. You establish human authority and often use it to accomplish your will. I pray for my nation’s leaders today, asking you to give them wisdom, discernment and knowledge beyond their own. I pray for leaders who would make decisions that allow us to live peaceful lives, decisions that reflect godly and holy principles. (Daniel 2:21, Romans 13:1, 1 Timothy 2:1-2)
Day 4 – Pray for your state and local leaders
Lord, today I pray for my state and local leaders. It’s often these leaders whose decisions affect us the greatest. Please put people in office who are trustworthy and God-fearing and who will not seek dishonest gain. Guide their decisions. Remind them, Father, that they will give an account to you for their leadership. (Exodus 18:21, Hebrews 13:17)
Day 5 – Pray for godly counsel for all of your leaders
Father, I pray that you would surround each of my leaders with wise advisors. Where they are foolishly ignoring godly counsel, make them wise. Turn their hearts to you and to truth. Help them to accept hard truths from wise advisors rather than take hold of deceitful advice that sounds good but offers no true value. (Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 21:1 Proverbs 12:15, Proverbs 27:6)
Day 6 – Pray for law enforcement
Dear God, I pray that you would protect the men and women who serve as peacemakers. Equip them as they defend the weak and the fatherless, the poor and the oppressed; and as they rescue the weak and needy, saving them from the hand of the wicked. Where you have authorized them to punish, give them wisdom and discernment. (Matthew 5:9, Romans 13:4, Psalm 82:3-4)
Day 7 – Pray for the judges
Lord, your word says that you are a God of justice. I pray for you to work in the judges in our nation to judge rightly and that they would heed the words that Jehoshaphat spoke to the judges: “Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the LORD, who is with you whenever you give a verdict.” (Prov 28:5, 2 Chronicles 19:6)
Day 8- Pray for the spiritual leaders
Dear God, I pray today for the spiritual leaders. I lift up my own pastor as well as all of those who lead your people. May each one hold firmly to the truth of Scripture, so that they can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. Open their eyes to the foolishness of the wisdom of this world. Encourage and bless them in their ministry. (Titus 1: 9, 1 Corinthians 3:19)
Day 9 -Pray that hearts would turn to God
Lord, your word says that ‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.’ I pray for a wave of repentance in this nation and a famine in us that we hunger and thirst for righteousness, and look for it only in you. I ask specifically that you would weed out the evil from those who serve as leaders and put an end to their influence. (Proverbs 14:34, Matthew 5:6)
Day 10- Pray to shine a light
Loving Father, please help your children to represent you well. May our words and actions reflect love the way you describe it: patient, kind, not rude or easily angered, taking no pleasure in evil. Help us to serve as Jesus taught us to–being bold and unashamed and at the same time gentle and humble. Remind us of this whether we interact in person or on social media. (1 Corinthians 13, John 13:15)
Day 11 – Pray that truth would prevail
God of truth, your word says that you detest lying lips but delight in the trustworthy. Please convict those working in news media of this. Please also give us discernment to determine truth from deception and to judge correctly, not merely by appearances or popular opinion. Reveal deception and shine a light on truth for all to see. (Proverbs 15:14, John 7:24, Proverbs 12:22)
Day 12 – Pray to speak the truth in love
Lord, too often either I don’t speak at all or I don’t speak kindly. Help me change that. Prompt me to speak and give me the courage to do so. When I do, I ask that you give me both a gentle tongue and the right words to say. I know I won’t always see a result from this, but I trust you, Lord, that any words you provide won’t return to you empty. (Eph 4:15, Prov 15:1, Luke 12:11-12, Isaiah 55:11)
Day 13 – Pray for bitterness to dissolve
Father, many these days seem unable to interact respectfully with anyone who has different ideas. Please don’t let that be me. I pray for a revival of respect in our nation. May people stop being bitter and angry at others, and may the yelling and cursing and rudeness end. Instead, may kindness and compassion flourish as we forgive others just as you forgave us. (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Day 14 – Pray that we would be watching and ready for his kingdom
King of all the earth, you are seated on your throne and reign over the nations. Your kingdom is coming, and I want to be ready. Please open my eyes to recognize the signs of Jesus’ return that I would not be deceived. Show me anything that would keep me from living forever with you, and prompt me to share my hope that more may be saved. (Psalm 47:7-8, Matt 6:9-10, and 24:4, 1 Tim 2:4)
As you pray for your country, keep these words in mind…
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
1 John 5:14
