Family Bible Journal

May 24, 2016 by Susan 10 Comments

A daily Bible Journal for your family to practice the habit of being in God’s Word every day. This is a creative and informal way to start the practice.

A daily Bible Journal for your family to practice the habit of being in God's Word every day.

I don’t think there’s a Christian parent out there who isn’t looking for ways to ensure that their children grow up with a strong foundation in the Word of God.  Developing the habit of daily Bible reading can be tough for us to do ourselves, let alone teaching it to our kids.

There are a lot of family devotions out there that are great.  The best ones encourage discussion and family bonding.

Teaching/modeling for our kids how to pray came pretty naturally.  One thing we struggled to do, however, was to get our boys to read the Bible on their own on a daily basis.

A Unique Headboard

May 23, 2016 by Susan 4 Comments

Create something unique for your home like this re-purposed headboard.

A while back there was a show on HGTV called “Decorating Cents”.  Joan Steffend did inexpensive home decorating projects.  Every so often she would visit an architectural remnant store in a segment called, “Trash to Treasure”.

It was filmed in Minnesota, where I live.

I really love the idea of adding character to a home with re-purposing old items in new ways.  The first project I ever undertook to do that was creating a headboard.

I knew I wanted to use something that wasn’t a headboard to make a headboard.  I thought a door was my best bet.  I looked at new doors and old doors.  I looked at a lot of doors.

And then I stopped in Art & Architecture, the store that Joan Steffend used to spotlight on her show.

Wow.

Free Videos for Your Homeschool

May 19, 2016 by Susan 2 Comments

Crash Course Videos are short and effective supplements to your high school curriculum. My kids love them!

One of the best things about homeschooling is that you can use a wide variety of resources.  It’s also the ideal in that you’re able to cater curriculum to the learning style of your student.

I am a self-declared curriculum junkie and find myself often talking about things we’ve used.  I wrote recently about a resource we used for spelling/vocabulary that we really loved, as well as a human development course that I would recommend, and a number of resources that we’ve used to prepare for credit by exam (CLEP/DSST tests).

I really like telling people about what has worked for us.  Because not everything has.  And I especially like talking about free resources!

We’ve used these free videos in a variety of subjects.

Kids Summer Roundup

May 18, 2016 by Susan 2 Comments

Lots of links to crafts, cool treats and fun outdoor activities to do with your kids this summer!

One summer when my kids were in elementary school, I wrote a bunch of crafts, activities and fun treat ideas on slips of paper.  We put them into a bucket and designated one day each week as “Summer Fun Day.”  On those days, they would pull out one slip and we’d do whatever was on it.

Are you looking for fun things to do with your kids this summer that aren’t going to completely drain your wallet or your energy?

You are in the right place!

I’ve put together a list of inexpensive and awesome ideas for you.

Window Light Fixture

May 17, 2016 by Susan Leave a Comment

Make a light fixture from a vintage window!

I’m an idea person…big picture all the way.  My dad is an engineer, and can figure out a way to do just about anything.  We make a great team when it comes to my home decorating projects!

The hutch that I made into an island was pretty cut and dry.  My husband, who is talented in many ways but not especially handy, and I were able to complete it all on our own.

The Light Fixture

When I had the brainstorm that a window would make a great light fixture, it was dad who got the call.

Carrot Cake Bread

May 16, 2016 by Susan 4 Comments

Chunky, fruity and nutty. A delicious recipe for carrot cake bread.

Chunky.  Nutty.  Fruity.

If those are words you would like to see in a description of your snack, then this recipe is for you.

Sometimes, I get sneaky and hide the good stuff, like in my chocolate pancakes.  But my preference is to stuff my treats chock full.

This quick bread has the taste of a decadent carrot cake, but is made with fruits and vegetables, nuts and healthy coconut oil.
